Atomium Earrings 1 - Spinel and Sapphires by Independent Jeweller Iain Sainsbury of Iain Sainsbury Designs

Presenting the Atomium Earrings, an exquisite addition to the ATOMIUM collection by independent jeweller Iain Sainsbury of Iain Sainsbury Designs, based in South Cambridgeshire. These 9ct gold sandcast earrings are inspired by the iconic Atomium structure in Belgium and feature an artful mix of spinel and sapphires.

Key Features:

  • Material. Crafted from 9ct SMO (Single Mine Origin) gold, sandcast using sand from Chapel Porth beach in Cornwall, providing a unique, deep texture.
  • Design. Each earring showcases a hoop structure, with fine tube settings that mirror the architectural design of the Atomium.
  • Gemstones. One earring is set with a large purple spinel, and the other with a green sapphire, accompanied by smaller Australian parti sapphires for a stunning contrast.
  • Handmade Earwires. Finished with handcrafted 9ct gold earwires, adding an elegant touch.
  • One-of-a-Kind Texture. The sandcast process, using sand from a famous surfing beach in Cornwall, creates a unique texture for each pair.

Each element of these earrings is cast once and then carefully cleaned, polished, and set by hand, making each pair truly one of a kind.

Iain is an artisan fine jeweller creating unique, one-of-a-kind pieces. After a 20-year career in pharmaceuticals, ended by burnout, he began to make jewellery in 2020. Initially self taught, but now having diplomas in Fine and Advanced Jewellery, Iain's work reimagines iconic designs using sandcasting to create texture and gemstones to add colour. All pieces are made with recycled precious metals or SMO gold and all gemstones are ethically sourced.

Founder

Iain Sainsbury

Creating jewellery is my third career. During my PhD research I was commissioned into the Army Reserve and joined communications side of the Army, eventually commanding a Squadron before retiring in 2010.

Concurrently and after finishing my PhD in cell biology, I spent over 20 years in the global pharmaceutical industry. After burnout curtailed my career in 2018, I had a real desire to do something that had significantly less impact on the environment and more focus on creating something long-lasting.

My journey began by restoring vintage razors before moving into making jewellery with upcycled copper and wood. By 2020 I had taught myself to create more ambitious pieces. Since then, I have completed both the Fine and Advanced Jewellery Diplomas from the Jewellers Academy and have exhibited at Goldsmiths North. I live and work from my studio in rural South Cambridgeshire with my family and our two otterhounds, Tara and Willow

The jewellery industry needs to do more to reduce its carbon footprint. That’s why we offset 120x more carbon than we produce, plant a tree for every purchase, and promote jewellers that are leading by example.
