Iain Sainsbury Designs

Iain is an artisan fine jeweller creating unique, one-of-a-kind pieces. After a 20-year career in pharmaceuticals, ended by burnout, he began to make jewellery in 2020. Initially self taught, but now having diplomas in Fine and Advanced Jewellery, Iain's work reimagines iconic designs using sandcasting to create texture and gemstones to add colour. All pieces are made with recycled precious metals or SMO gold and all gemstones are ethically sourced.

Iain Sainsbury

Creating jewellery is my third career. During my PhD research I was commissioned into the Army Reserve and joined communications side of the Army, eventually commanding a Squadron before retiring in 2010.

Concurrently and after finishing my PhD in cell biology, I spent over 20 years in the global pharmaceutical industry. After burnout curtailed my career in 2018, I had a real desire to do something that had significantly less impact on the environment and more focus on creating something long-lasting.

My journey began by restoring vintage razors before moving into making jewellery with upcycled copper and wood. By 2020 I had taught myself to create more ambitious pieces. Since then, I have completed both the Fine and Advanced Jewellery Diplomas from the Jewellers Academy and have exhibited at Goldsmiths North.

I live and work from my studio in rural South Cambridgeshire with my family and our two otterhounds, Tara and Willow

Commissioning my ring from Iain was a lovely process: from the initial sketches, which he then tweaked for me according to what I wanted, to seeing the ring at each stage of being made via photos, and finally receiving the beautiful piece itself. I wear it every day.
