Atomium Ring 1 – Sapphires and Diamond by Independent Jeweller Iain Sainsbury of Iain Sainsbury Designs

Part of the ATOMIUM collection, the Atomium Ring 1 is an extraordinary piece crafted by independent jeweller Iain Sainsbury of Iain Sainsbury Designs, based in South Cambridgeshire. Inspired by Belgium’s ATOMIUM structure, this ring combines architectural elegance with natural beauty, featuring unique stones and a sandcast 9ct SMO gold shank.

Key Features:

  • Material. Sandcast in 9ct SMO gold, using sand from Kennack Sands in Cornwall, renowned for its serpentine-rich composition.
  • Gemstones. This one-of-a-kind ring is set with three Australian parti sapphires, a paler unheated Sri Lankan sapphire, and a salt and pepper diamond, each stone carefully chosen for its individuality and charm.
  • Design. The fine tube settings and support structure echo the ATOMIUM’s architecture, adding a modern touch to the ring’s natural inspiration.
  • Size. Available in size N1/2, with slight adjustments possible upon request.

This ring is a true original, as the sandcast mould used to create it can only be used once, ensuring every ring is completely unique. After casting, each piece is meticulously cleaned, polished, and set by hand.

Iain is an artisan fine jeweller creating unique, one-of-a-kind pieces. After a 20-year career in pharmaceuticals, ended by burnout, he began to make jewellery in 2020. Initially self taught, but now having diplomas in Fine and Advanced Jewellery, Iain's work reimagines iconic designs using sandcasting to create texture and gemstones to add colour. All pieces are made with recycled precious metals or SMO gold and all gemstones are ethically sourced.

Founder

Iain Sainsbury

Creating jewellery is my third career. During my PhD research I was commissioned into the Army Reserve and joined communications side of the Army, eventually commanding a Squadron before retiring in 2010.

Concurrently and after finishing my PhD in cell biology, I spent over 20 years in the global pharmaceutical industry. After burnout curtailed my career in 2018, I had a real desire to do something that had significantly less impact on the environment and more focus on creating something long-lasting.

My journey began by restoring vintage razors before moving into making jewellery with upcycled copper and wood. By 2020 I had taught myself to create more ambitious pieces. Since then, I have completed both the Fine and Advanced Jewellery Diplomas from the Jewellers Academy and have exhibited at Goldsmiths North. I live and work from my studio in rural South Cambridgeshire with my family and our two otterhounds, Tara and Willow

The jewellery industry needs to do more to reduce its carbon footprint. That’s why we offset 120x more carbon than we produce, plant a tree for every purchase, and promote jewellers that are leading by example.
