Uniquely Textured Thin Sandcast Ring by Independent Jeweller Iain Sainsbury of Iain Sainsbury Designs

Discover the Uniquely Textured Thin Sandcast Ring, a beautifully simple band crafted by independent jeweller Iain Sainsbury of Iain Sainsbury Designs, based in South Cambridgeshire. Using sand collected mainly from Cornwall, each ring captures a distinct tactile texture, making it perfect as a unique wedding ring.

Key Features:

  • Material Options. Available in gold or silver; gold offers long-lasting texture, while silver will gradually smooth with wear, enhancing its character over time.
  • Texture. Created using the Delft Clay sandcasting technique, which imparts a natural, one-of-a-kind texture from the sand itself.
  • Width. Approximately 3mm, providing a comfortable, understated fit.
  • Finish Options. Hand-finished with either a satin or polished surface, with satin recommended for highlighting the texture.
  • Custom Sizing. Standard size R; for sizes larger or smaller, please use the contact button for pricing and availability.

Each sandcast ring is uniquely made, with the mould used only once, ensuring every piece is a true original. Iain Sainsbury’s handcrafted designs reflect the natural beauty of Cornwall’s coastline, making this ring a meaningful choice for those who appreciate custom, nature-inspired jewellery.

Iain Sainsbury Designs

Iain is an artisan fine jeweller creating unique, one-of-a-kind pieces. After a 20-year career in pharmaceuticals, ended by burnout, he began to make jewellery in 2020. Initially self taught, but now having diplomas in Fine and Advanced Jewellery, Iain's work reimagines iconic designs using sandcasting to create texture and gemstones to add colour. All pieces are made with recycled precious metals or SMO gold and all gemstones are ethically sourced.

Founder

Iain Sainsbury

Creating jewellery is my third career. During my PhD research I was commissioned into the Army Reserve and joined communications side of the Army, eventually commanding a Squadron before retiring in 2010.

Concurrently and after finishing my PhD in cell biology, I spent over 20 years in the global pharmaceutical industry. After burnout curtailed my career in 2018, I had a real desire to do something that had significantly less impact on the environment and more focus on creating something long-lasting.

My journey began by restoring vintage razors before moving into making jewellery with upcycled copper and wood. By 2020 I had taught myself to create more ambitious pieces. Since then, I have completed both the Fine and Advanced Jewellery Diplomas from the Jewellers Academy and have exhibited at Goldsmiths North. I live and work from my studio in rural South Cambridgeshire with my family and our two otterhounds, Tara and Willow

The jewellery industry needs to do more to reduce its carbon footprint. That’s why we offset 120x more carbon than we produce, plant a tree for every purchase, and promote jewellers that are leading by example.
